Management Partners supports IFC with fertilizer market study for Iraq and Kazakhstan

When IFC required an in-depth market assessment of the fertilizer markets in Iraq and Kazakhstan, the international development institution turned to Dubai-based consultancy Management Partners for strategic support.

Around the world, IFC is strengthening sustainable fertilizer manufacturing in developing countries by partnering with stakeholders to build efficient, competitive and sustainable production capacities that enhance resource management, increase availability of critical manufacturing intermediate goods and final products, and encourages formation and strengthening of local supply chains.

The institution’s commitment to the fertilizer sector dates back to the late 1960s, and since then the IFC has provided hundreds of millions in financing for the construction of fertilizer plants, related infrastructure, and other sector investments.

Fertilizer market in Iraq and Kazakhstan

To support its investment planning for the Iraqi and Kazakh markets, IFC commissioned Management Partners to conduct a strategic market assessment of the fertilizer markets in these countries. The study aimed to evaluate the current and projected demand, supply chain dynamics, production capacity, as well as identify investment opportunities for the years ahead.

Additionally, the project aimed to develop investment pitch presentations to attract potential investors and promote sustainable sector growth.

The approach

Management Partners kicked off the project with a comprehensive market analysis, which included an in-depth study of fertilizer supply chains across the region: mapping the value chain from production to distribution. It also evaluated current and projected demand in Iraq and Kazakhstan, while conducting pricing, import-export parity, and production capacity assessments.

Following on from this, the consulting firm was able to identify investment opportunities by looking at ‘gaps’ in the marketplace, in areas such as technology, supply chain, logistics, agricultural regulations, and human capital. Management Partners also explored the possible climate impact and sustainability challenges for local production.

The outcome

The end report of Management Partners provided IFC with insights into potential improvements that could enhance the fertilizer value chains, including high-potential investment projects for governments and industry players. The consultants also developed an investment pitch targeted at both local and international investors.

With these insights, IFC gained an in-depth understanding of the fertilizer markets in Iraq and Kazakhstan, incorporating them into its strategic planning and investment strategy.

Management Partners is a management consulting firm with around 40 experts spread across offices in Baghdad, Manama, and Dubai.
