Roland Berger has launched a Sports practice in the Middle East, spearheaded by fresh senior recruit Alia Sabala.

The launch of the practice comes at an opportune moment, with the region’s sports arena undergoing stellar growth and a sweeping transformation – with much more yet to come. The surge is fueled by significant government expenditure on sports, the rapid adoption of innovative technologies, increasing private investments, and a rising consciousness around physical and mental health in a predominantly youthful demographic.

“I am excited about what the future for sport in the Middle East region looks like and am delighted to lead Roland Berger’s efforts in the landscape,” said Sabala.

“At Roland Berger, we are building unparalleled sports advisory capabilities that will serve our clients in a unique and innovative approach, leveraging hands-on sport industry and cross functional expertise,” she continued.

Appointed a partner, Sabala has been tasked with establishing and growing the practice. She brings more than a decade worth of experience and an impressive tenure in the sports consultancy space, having been at the forefront of various initiatives aimed at advancing the region's sports sector including the development of multiple national and regional sport strategies for GCC countries.

Sabala joins Roland Berger from PwC, where she spent the past decade advising public sector institutions, sports clubs, and sporting bodies, including Olympic Committees, various Sports Federations, and Ministries. Earlier in her career, Sabala worked in private equity and deals at EFG Hermes.

Throughout her career, Sabala has contributed to the development of strategic plans, the orchestration of sports events and competitions, and the enhancement of institutional frameworks. She also has experience with merger & acquisition advisory, including investment appraisals and commercial due diligence.

“Alia's arrival marks a significant commitment by Roland Berger to harness the transformative power of sports in the Middle East, enhancing its influence on the global stage and furthering its contribution to the community and economic development,” said Santiago Castillo, Managing Partner at Roland Berger in the Middle East.
