How businesses can harness AI beyond the hype: Lessons from Strategic Gears
AI is rapidly evolving from a tech-sector buzzword into a fundamental pillar of global business strategy. In a new podcast episode from Strategic Gears, Farhan Khan sits down with Nagaraj Padmanabhan – the firm’s AI and data practice lead – to demystify the technology and explore its impact on the Middle Eastern market.
In the modern business landscape, AI is often misunderstood as a form of sentient machine consciousness. However, according to Padmanabhan, a senior partner with over 21 years of experience, the reality is far more grounded in mathematics. He describes AI as mathematical and statistical models at scale, designed to drive measurable business outcomes through human-like pattern recognition.
This shift toward data-driven intelligence is becoming a cornerstone of regional growth. As Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East invest heavily in digital transformation, understanding the basics of AI has become essential for leaders and professionals alike.
“AI is a powerful capability that helps humans improve productivity,” said Padmanabhan. “Whether it is drafting an email, creating marketing content, or customer segmentation in banking, it mimics and summarizes based on data to deliver specific outcomes.”
Debunking the myths
Padmanabhan explains that one of the biggest misconceptions, even among C-suite executives, is that AI possesses ‘intent’ or ‘consciousness’. In reality, AI is a tool that requires human direction to be effective.
A common fear is that AI will lead to mass unemployment. However, the podcast highlights a different perspective: AI will not kill jobs, but it will ‘kill tasks’. By automating repetitive processes, the technology pushes humans toward higher-value judgment and creativity. The future of work is not machines replacing humans, but ‘AI-augmented human judgment’ replacing those who fail to adapt.
To support businesses looking to integrate these tools, Padmanabhan emphasizes a ‘problem-first’ approach rather than a ‘technology-first’ one. That means first defining the problem, then looking into data quality to ensure a strong data backbone, and finding the right architecture. Next comes a proof of concept (PoC), which can eventually be scaled across the enterprise.
“Data is the fuel, but the problem statement is the engine. Numbers don’t lie – look at your balance sheet to find where AI can actually add value,” notes Padmanabhan.
The importance of governance
While AI offers immense benefits, Padmanabhan warned of the inherent risks regarding bias and ethics. During the discussion, he shared a case study of a recruitment model he built that began to show bias.
Despite having the correct skills, the model started rejecting certain groups based on ethnicity and gender because of patterns it had ‘learned’ from historical data. This highlights why AI governance and regulation are critical. Padmanabhan expects a plethora of new roles to emerge in the next 12 months specifically focused on ethical and responsible AI.
Staying relevant in the AI era
For individuals and students, the barrier to entry for AI is lower than ever. Padmanabhan suggests that traditional coding skills are no longer a prerequisite for building models.
“Start by leveraging LLMs (Large Language Models) for productivity – summarizing reports, drafting emails, and freeing up time. Secondly, have a basic understanding of AI,” says Padmanabhan.
“I believe coding is for everyone now because you don’t need to know the ‘nuts and bolts’ to build. If you have domain knowledge in marketing or industry, you can use ready-made models to build small AI PoCs. It just takes curiosity and time.”
As Saudi Arabia continues to rise in global innovation rankings, the message from Strategic Gears is clear: The next 12 months will see faster, smaller, and more powerful models. Organizations and individuals who embrace these tools – while maintaining a strong foundation in statistics and ethics – will be the ones to lead the Kingdom’s diversified economy into the future.
