In a bold move that practices what it preaches, Sustainable Square has publicly declared its commitment to becoming a net zero business by 2030.

Setting 2023 as its base year, Sustainable Square has set out to reduce 90% of its Scope 2 and 3 emissions by 2030. In the run-up to that goal, the consulting firm aims to achieve a 60% reduction in total emissions by 2026.

Monaem Ben Lellahom, CEO of Sustainable Square, said that the concretization of its goals marks a pivotal moment for the organisation, and reflects its commitment to accountability and climate action.

Headquartered in the UAE, Sustainable Square is an advisory firm dedicated to ESG and sustainability services. The firm provides a suite of consultancy services designed to achieve more sustainable practices, including net zero strategy development, ESG disclosure, climate change action planning, responsible investments, and social impact.

Buoyed by strong demand for ESG expertise, Sustainable Square has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years. In its latest financial year, the firm lifted its revenues by 34% (much faster than the consulting industry’s average path), with its headcount now at around 40 consultants and staff.

The Scope 2 and 3 commitment to emissions reduction is part of the firm’s overarching goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2030, and comes shortly after Sustainable Square joined The Climate Pledge (an initiative that encourages SMEs to achieve net zero by 2040), and months after becoming a signatory of the UAE Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge.

Chief executive Ben Lellahom, who owns the business together with non-executive board member Hana Alawi, said that Sustainable Square’s net zero strategy is aligned with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology, with reporting to be made transparent to all its stakeholders.

“As we embark on this path, transparency and accountability will be key. Our first net zero progress report in 2025 will not only reflect the impact of our initiatives but also serve as a tool for learning and improvement. By sharing our progress openly, we hope to inspire others and contribute to a collective effort for a healthier planet.”

Sustainable Square operates with offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

While net zero has become a key pillar of many organizations, reaching that goal at a global level will require a collective effort from both governments and private sector businesses, as well as a huge amount of financing.
