Société Générale Maroc taps consultants to modernize its banking infrastructure

In a major digital transformation upgrade, Société Générale Maroc has tapped IBM and Power Maroc to support the transition to a new IT infrastructure. The multi-million overhaul is designed to enhance operational efficiency, bolster security, and deliver modern digital banking services to its customers.

As Morocco becomes increasingly digitized, customers are increasingly demanding seamless and swift digital experiences. Recognizing this shift, Société Générale Maroc identified the need to modernize its IT infrastructure. While reliable, the bank’s existing monolithic systems, posed challenges in scalability and integration with third-party services, hindering the rapid deployment of new digital offerings.

“This transformation positions Société Générale Maroc as an innovative and forward-thinking bank, setting the stage for a strategy that combines technological robustness, operational excellence, and innovation,” said Said Adil El Kourri, CIO of the Moroccan bank.

A subsidiary of France-headquartered Société Générale, Société Générale Maroc has around 4,000 employees and 400 locations, serving nearly 800,000 customers.

The new infrastructure

The banks’ new IT infrastructure is centred around IBM Cloud Pak, a suite of AI-powered, containerized software solutions built on Red Hat OpenShift. The setup has been designed to help Société Générale Maroc quickly develop, deploy, and manage applications across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

The first phase of the IT program focused on resolving core performance issues and enhancing security measures. Upgrades to IBM Guardium and IBM MQ were implemented to safeguard sensitive customer data and ensure high-availability messaging between applications, even during peak periods. Additionally, the deployment of IBM Instana provided the bank’s IT team with enhanced observability across the infrastructure, facilitating proactive issue resolution.

In the current phase, the bank is adopting Power Maroc’s containerization platform, rKube, built on IBM Red Hat OpenShift. This integration is set to streamline services and promote innovation at scale.

Through these ongoing modernization efforts, Société Générale Maroc is set to deliver enhanced digital services, fostering greater customer engagement and solidify its position as a leader in Morocco’s banking industry.
